Lifelong Learning Remains Central to Mayo Clinic's Mission Amid Rapid Healthcare Change

By: Mayo Clinic

Mayo Clinic (08/14/26) Brenden, Matthew

Ongoing developments in artificial intelligence (AI), precision medicine, digital health and quality improvement are transforming healthcare and creating new demands for workforce education. Mayo Clinic is emphasizing ongoing professional education to help its personnel adapt to changing technologies, clinical practices, and knowledge requirements. Through its School of Continuous Professional Development, the organization provides a range of educational activities, including regularly scheduled learning sessions, online courses, podcasts, and self-paced programs. A recent area of focus has been preparing healthcare professionals to understand and apply AI in clinical, research, educational, and administrative settings. Mayo Clinic has developed courses that examine practical uses of AI and considerations for its responsible implementation in healthcare. The institution's approach builds on a long-standing emphasis on continuing education, which includes conferences, certification-related activities, and other learning opportunities designed to help clinicians stay current in their fields. Educational offerings have increasingly expanded to online and flexible formats to accommodate busy schedules and improve accessibility. "Education has always been central to Mayo Clinic's mission," says William Palmer, MD, dean of Mayo Clinic School of Continuous Professional Development. "By expanding access to emerging areas of learning, we are investing in our people and empowering them to deliver the highest-quality care, research and education for the patients and communities we serve."
