In order to create a systematic process for review and approval of healthcare organizations' implementation of quality improvement and patient safety (OIPS) work and that enables organizations to offer continuing certification credit to physicians for their engagement, the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Portfolio Program was developed. The program — which began as a pilot between the Mayo Clinic and the American Boards of Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Pediatrics — has grown to include more than 100 organizations. The program also now includes government agencies, hospital groups, associations, and other health organizations, in addition to academic medical centers and medical schools. Continuing certification credit has been issued to physicians more than 60,000 times, data show, including credit for more than 5,000 activities. Additionally, the program has implemented standardized templates for some types of quality improvement work to facilitate QIPS submissions.
