Dear Alliance Members,
Artificial intelligence (AI) was a huge topic at our last Alliance meeting — and for good reason. We had at least 13 sessions covering everything from ethical principles and guidance on using AI to practical demonstrations of AI applications in CE. Members showcased how they're implementing AI in grant writing, content development, innovative content delivery strategies and qualitative outcomes evaluation. One medical education company even presented on how they secured funding for and developed a CE activity designed to teach physicians how to effectively interact with AI models like ChatGPT in their practice.
It's clear that AI is transforming knowledge work across industries, with particular implications for those of us immersed in the continuing education for healthcare professionals. This was reinforced in our membership survey, which revealed a strong demand for how AI can enhance our work — whether in assessing educational needs, writing CE grant proposals, content development, outcomes analysis or other areas.
From Task Force to Committee
In response to this growing interest, the Alliance created an AI Task Force in 2024, which developed the Alliance’s AI Position Statement with guiding principles for using AI in medical education and conducted the membership survey on AI. This year, recognizing that AI will continue to significantly impact how our members approach their contributions to CE, we've transitioned the AI Task Force to a permanent AI Committee.
Our 2025 Goals
For 2025, we have three primary objectives:
1. Establish a strong foundation for the committee.
We're currently electing a vice chair and formalizing our structure to ensure the committee can produce valuable work for years to come.
2. Develop a dynamic educational program.
We're partnering with the Alliance Professional Development Committee to create a "living" educational curriculum on AI. Given how rapidly AI tools are evolving, a one-time educational program simply won't suffice. Instead, we aim to leverage the extensive knowledge within our organization and efficiently share it with all members.
3. Foster thought leadership on AI.
With the introduction of reasoning models and agentic capabilities, AI's potential to transform our work becomes clearer every day. We need to proactively consider how to prepare for this technological revolution — identifying and considering different scenarios and planning our collective response. What happens when AI agents can handle most repetitive tasks? What unique value do we as humans bring to the education of healthcare professionals and working with AI? These are the questions we need to address thoughtfully to position ourselves as leaders rather than merely responders to change.
We Need Your Input!
For these initiatives to succeed, we need your active participation. Please let us know using the Google form below:
- What do you want to learn about AI?
- What are your preferred methods for receiving education about AI?
- If you're using AI effectively (for video/audio editing, content development, needs assessment, outcomes, engaging learners or other applications), would you consider writing an article for the Almanac, or creating a mini webinar to share your knowledge? (Contact us, we’d love to work with you to implement your idea!)
- Change can be challenging. Is AI disrupting your work? How are you adjusting and managing this transition process? What additional education or resources would help you?
- What do you want the AI-powered future of our field to look like? How should we navigate this technological revolution?
Please submit your answers using this Google form.
Thank you for your continued engagement, and we look forward to hearing your thoughts and ideas as we embark on this exciting journey together.
Sincerely,
Alliance AI Committee*
