Using AI to Show CPD's Catalytic Role in Transforming Clinician Views

By: Dustin Ensign, BSc, CHCP

In the dynamic healthcare landscape, the success of innovative practices and technologies often hinges on the readiness of clinicians to embrace transformative change. An exploratory examination of over 300 healthcare provider questions posed after participating in a continuing professional development (CPD) program, spanning 2020–2024, sheds light on the evolving attitudes of clinicians toward emerging healthcare tools. Leveraging the power of generative AI, this analysis underscores the pivotal role of CPD education in shaping mindsets throughout the innovation adoption lifecycle.

The exploratory longitudinal analysis revealed a distinct trajectory in the attitudes of healthcare providers. In the early years of 2020–2021, significant skepticism and ethical concerns were prevalent, as clinicians questioned the practicality and potential consequences of adopting new innovations. However, over time, a palpable shift occurred — a transition to curiosity. Providers displayed growing interest in understanding the intricacies of these innovations and their potential benefits.

As the years progressed into 2022–2023, the nature of provider questions underwent an additional transformation. The initial focus on theoretical considerations gave way to a heightened emphasis on practical implementation challenges. Providers expressed concerns about integration, reimbursement policies and addressing technical limitations. Importantly, they also grappled with the challenges of driving adoption among their multidisciplinary colleagues and patients, recognizing the psychological impact on individuals.

This trajectory aligns with the typical lifecycle of new innovation adoption — from initial uncertainty to a more nuanced understanding of the limitations and real-world optimization needs as familiarity increases. Crucially, the data highlights the maturation of healthcare providers' perspectives, evolving from individual patient/provider concerns to a broader, systemic understanding of integrating innovations across entire healthcare infrastructures.

The pivotal role of CPD education in this transformative journey cannot be overstated. CPD programs have the power to guide clinicians through uncertainties, promote continuous learning and ensure professionals are equipped to navigate the dynamic landscape of healthcare innovations. By addressing the shifting needs of providers, from early skepticism to practical implementation challenges, CPD education has catalyzed the transformation of clinician views, ultimately paving the way for the seamless integration of groundbreaking healthcare technologies. This exploratory longitudinal analysis underscores the importance of adaptable educational strategies that cater to new perspectives of healthcare professionals. By fostering a holistic, patient-centered approach and addressing implementation hurdles, CPD education has emerged as a driving force in shaping the attitudes and readiness of clinicians to embrace transformative healthcare solutions.

3 Key Takeaways for Educational Strategists:

1. Dynamic Evolution of Provider Attitudes

The exploratory longitudinal analysis uncovers a dynamic evolution in provider attitudes due to continuing professional development (CPD). From early skepticism in 2020 to a transition to curiosity by 2021–2022, providers moved from expressing doubts to showing increased interest in understanding emerging innovations. This evolution emphasizes the importance of adaptable educational strategies that cater to the changing perspectives of healthcare professionals.

2. Growing Awareness of Implementation Challenges

As discussions transitioned from theoretical to practical considerations, a notable shift occurred in provider concerns. While early years focused on theoretical aspects, later years (2022–2023) witnessed worries about adoption and the practical integration of innovations into routine practice. Educational strategies need to address this growing awareness of implementation challenges, providing insights and solutions that assist clinicians in overcoming hurdles associated with the adoption of new innovations.

3. Holistic Approach Toward Patient-centered Care

The trajectory of questions shifted from initial provider-centric concerns to a transition to patient impact. Providers increasingly considered the patient perspective, including psychological effects, coping mechanisms and patient education. Educational strategies should reflect this shift, encouraging a more holistic approach toward patient-centered care.
