The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) has eliminated the requirement for active members to earn 25 continuing medical education (CME) credits through live, in-person activities. This change begins in the 2019-2021 cycle and covers members in the previous cycle who were granted extensions through Dec. 31, 2021. Active members must still report at least 150 CME credits every three years, and at least half must be Prescribed credits. Members can still elect to fulfill CME through certain live activities, but AAFP said removing the in-person CME requirement will "eliminate confusion" about reporting in-person CME activity that has shifted to other formats. Members can also select formats most suited to their personal needs and preferences. Events remain primarily virtual, but AAFP said it expects to reinstate in-person offerings in 2022, and "will continue to evaluate how to optimize CME for members' continuous learning needs."
