The Feasibility and Impact of Implementing Brief Educator Development Sessions in Underresourced Residency Training Sites

By: Journal of Graduate Medical Education

Journal of Graduate Medical Education (08/01/25) Vol. 17, No. 4 Silver, Adrienne; Carney, Patricia A.; Church, Robynn; et al.

A study explored the feasibility and utility of offering short, web-based educator development sessions to residency training program directors and other educators in rural and underserved communities. The study evaluated monthly 25-minute web-based education sessions for residency educators in Oregon and California from September 2021 to October 2023. The sessions aimed to improve teaching and assessment skills. Feasibility was assessed through educator attendance and technology use, while utility was measured in terms of continuing medical education (CME) credit requests and participant feedback on applying new skills. In all, there were 91 participants, approximately 75% of whom were physicians. More than 50% of the participants connected to the sessions through desktop computers, and the rest used mobile devices. Of the 161 viewed sessions, CME credit was requested for about 30% (48 sessions). The implementation of concise, web-based professional development for educators is viable within geographically isolated and resource-limited residency training sites. A key finding was the participants' expressed intent to integrate the learned material into their work with trainees.
