By: Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics

Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics (03/10/25) Bergquist, Erin; Buyckingham-Schutt, Lyndi; Smalley, Scott; et al.

New research highlights the need for a systemic approach between individual, educational, and professional levels for dietetics education. Using semi-structured interviews with 13 registered dietitian nutritionists from around the United States, the researchers identified three interrelated themes: individual characteristics, such as personal attributes, perspective seeking, and relationship building; nutrition and dietetics education, including training, resources, accreditation requirements, and value awareness; and the dietetics profession, including organizational culture, education, and continuing education. The researchers conclude that "integrating systems thinking into nutrition and dietetics education can be facilitated across three levels: individual, education and the profession through training, resources, accreditation competencies and awareness." Doing so, they note, will involve addressing resistance to change and working to promote a cultural shift within the profession.
