TRUST the Process: How Binghamton's Interprofessional Collaboration Is Lending a Helping Hand to Local Communities

Binghamton University's School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is working to build trust within the community with The Rural and Underserved Service Track (TRUST). The 2-year, co-curricular track is open to students in healthcare-related fields, such as pharmacy, medicine, social working, nursing, and public health. The program uses educational retreats and hands-on service activities to help students develop clinical skills and empathetic approaches to care. The emphasis is on providing care for rural and underserved populations, but there are no set geographical boundaries, so students can conduct service projects where they see a need. Rachel Lucas, director of TRUST and clinical assistant professor of pharmacy practice, notes that TRUST scholars have "delivered immunizations, led Narcan trainings, hosted drug take-back events, and taught both students and community members about important health skills and resources." She adds, "TRUST provides an additional level of workplace development that students may not experience in their primary didactic curriculum."
