Evaluating the Short and Long-term Effect of a Health Professions Education Certificate Program for Clinical Faculty

By: Journal of Continuing Education in the Health Professions

Journal of Continuing Education in the Health Professions (07/08/26) Wood, Timothy J.; Akter, Ripa; Archibald, Douglas; et al.

A retrospective evaluation of the University of Ottawa's Healthcare Education Scholars Program found high levels of participant satisfaction and perceived improvements in teaching and curriculum-development skills. Participants also reported applying those skills in educational leadership, scholarship, and other professional roles. Using the New World Kirkpatrick Model to assess outcomes among clinical faculty and senior trainees who completed the program between 2009 and 2023, researchers reported gains across all evaluation levels, including learner satisfaction, knowledge and skill development, behavior change, career advancement, leadership opportunities, and strengthened professional identity. The authors concluded that the theory-informed evaluation demonstrates the value of longitudinal faculty development programs and provides a framework for examining learning processes, professional growth, and career outcomes, while highlighting the need for future research on comparative outcomes, inclusivity, and scholarly productivity.
