Researchers designed a mini-fellowship program to improve interprofessional clinician preceptors' knowledge, competencies, and self-effectiveness in teaching students and using cross-disciplinary quality improvement (QI) methods. The three-day program incorporated workshops on curriculum design, clinical education methods, QI, social health determinants, cultural humility and interprofessional teamwork. The authors applied quantitative and qualitative appraisals ranging from preprogram and postprogram knowledge and self-efficacy surveys to end-of-session and program evaluations. Five annual groups, including 41 preceptors, completed the course. Overall, participants experienced a 6.3% increase in correctly answered items on a QI knowledge test, increasing from 79.2% pre-test to 85.5% post-test. On a scale of 1 to 5, preceptors' average education/teaching self-efficacy rose from 2.79 to 3.80, with 94% recommending the program to their peers. The researchers say envision the program as a template "for academic centers charged with training future healthcare workers and supporting their community-based preceptors' training needs."
