Researchers evaluated dental professionals' experiences with the 2017 World Workshop's updated classification system for periodontal diseases. The revised system introduced a new staging and grading framework. Using a mixed-methods survey approach, the researchers assessed familiarity, usability, and integration into clinical practice. They found that periodontists and dental hygienists, particularly those in academic settings, were much more familiar and adept with the system than general dentists. Despite recognizing strengths in the classification, participants highlighted challenges in its complexity and called for revisions and more continuing education (CE). The authors concluded that simplifying the framework and offering targeted, care based CE, particularly for nonacademic practitioners, are critical for broader and more effective adoption.
