To better understand the state of orthodontic continuing professional development/education (CPD/CPE) across Europe, researchers conducted a survey for the years 2020-2024. Based on responses from 41 of 44 countries, the results showed that only 55% of respondents — mostly leaders of national orthodontic societies — knew the exact accreditation criteria for CPD/CPE, and that 76% of countries require orthodontists to earn between 14 and 220 CPD/CPE credits, revealing substantial heterogeneity and incompatibility in training standards across the continent. Credits were most commonly awarded for conferences (97%), seminars (95%), lectures (82%), and workshops or courses (84%), and in 55% of countries they must be accumulated within 5 years. "By understanding the differences in these parameters in European countries, we can work towards a future harmonization of standards in orthodontics training," the researchers conclude.
