Continuing Nursing Education Actions in the Face of Homophobia: An Integrative Review

An integrative literature review sought to explore continuing education actions for nurses facing homophobia in healthcare settings. The review, conducted in June 2022, identified six primary studies using "nursing education," "homophobia" and "sexual and gender minorities" as descriptors. The findings show that continuing education for nurses includes teaching materials, lectures, case studies and focus groups that address such topics as gender identity and affective-sexual orientation and health disparities and their association with homophobia in the healthcare arena. The continuing education actions helped to increase nurses' awareness of such issues, the researchers report, noting that more needs to be done "to create health spaces that meet the specific needs of these people."
