Collaboration, Education and Representation Shaping the Future of Paramedicine

Steve Poulton, Continuing Professional Development Advisor at the College of Paramedics in the United Kingdom, discusses the principles of collaboration, education, and representation that drive modern paramedicine. After transitioning from a career in the entertainment industry to paramedic work, he started creating continuing professional development (CPD) webinars during the pandemic. “When the world stopped, paramedics carried on,” he noted. His dual role — developing CPD content while still working on the frontline — keeps him attuned to the profession's evolving needs. “I still work frontline, so I talk to paramedics every day,” he explained, using that insight to shape educational programs. He champions the College's efforts to elevate paramedics' professional identity, citing initiatives like independent prescribing and the upcoming bid for Royal Charter status. Through campaigns like 'It's Not OK' and events such as The Emergency Services Show, Poulton aims to foster a culture of support and progress, emphasizing that his "ambition for the College is to keep being that voice – to never become stagnant.”
