Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) supports a vital structure of continuing medical education (CME)/continuing professional development (CPD), according to Vice President for CPD Lori Deitte and CPD Director Monique Drago. "Our strong relationships help connect the medical center and the school of medicine [university] to further synergize on education and professional development activities," they note in an interview. Deitte and Drago envision learning as an opportunity for improving competence, performance and patient care, with engagement and faculty retention also benefiting. "Additionally, as we have begun to connect with other departments on population healthcare concerns, this has brought to light an opportunity for collaboration between our office and the VUMC HR [human resources] learning unit to expand the HR learning portfolio with the principles used for developing CME activities," they explain. Deitte and Drago mention holding a strategic planning retreat focused on how learning might impel institutional goals and outcomes, which will inform a protocol "where our office partners with other offices or departments during the early planning phases of activities, aligning the learning goals with institutional pillar goals and outcomes metrics." They highlight the incorporation of micro-learning within the workplace through the development and deployment of the QuizTime quizzing app as particularly innovative, providing accredited quizzing courses. Future challenges and opportunities include interprofessional learning, future learning formats and student preferences, and data tracking, management and analysis.
