Utilizing the Pharmacists' Patient Care Process Within a Simulated Medication Management Experience for Medical Learners

By: American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education

American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education (02/26) Foushee, Jaime A.; Eagerton, David; Lindsey, Tommy; et al.

Researchers evaluated a simulated medication management experience for second-year medical students using the pharmacists' patient care process (PPCP) framework. After an orientation period, students rotated through stations aligned with the PPCP steps: Collect, Assess, Plan, Implement, and Monitor. They also completed surveys before and after the experience measuring their knowledge of the PPCP and confidence in performing each step. Among 310 participants from 2022-2024, only 24.5% were initially familiar with the PPCP; however, post-experience results showed statistically significant increases in confidence across all PPCP steps and in overall summed Likert-scale confidence levels (p<0.0001). Student course evaluations further supported the activity's value, suggesting that simulated learning using the PPCP can effectively strengthen medication-management knowledge and confidence among learners from other health professions.
