Trauma-Informed Patient and Public-Engaged Research: Development and Evaluation of an Online Training Program

The University of South Florida's mPATH partnership developed an online continuing education program applying trauma-informed care (TIC) principles to patient- and public-engaged research. The training content included an hour-long video that provided an overview of trauma and discussed the prevalence of trauma in the United States, its physical and behavior effects, the value of resilience, and TIC principles and practices. Other components included Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute resources on stakeholder-driven research and a second 60-minute video depicting strategies for applying TIC principles to stakeholder-driven research partnerships. Obtaining the continuing education unit certificate required participants to access all training content sections and complete a 23-question online assessment. Forty-six participants completed the training and evaluation survey, providing positive ratings for their achievement of the learning objectives and the speakers' performance. "The most salient suggestions for improvements related to technical matters and the desire for additional details, particularly related to trauma interventions," the authors note. They conclude that knowledge about trauma and TIC may help research partnerships involving "patients and public stakeholders studying a wide range of health conditions, potentially improving how stakeholders engage in co-producing research as well as producing research that addresses how trauma relates to their health condition under study."
