New research highlights the value of remedial continuing medical education (CME) in reducing physician disciplinary recidivism. The study included a national-level sample of 4,061 MD-physicians who received a first discipline, such as license restrictions or probation, between 2011 and 2015. In all, remedial CME was a condition of first discipline for 36% of the physicians (n=1,449), while 35% (n=1,426) were subject to further discipline within five years. Compared with physicians who did not have to complete remedial CME, those who were mandated to complete remedial CME as part of their first discipline by state medical boards had a lower likelihood of receiving additional discipline (odds ratio = 0.597; 95% confidence interval = 0.513, 0.696; P < .001) within 5 years, the researchers report.
