The Alliance Career Pathways Series (CPS) is designed for early career professionals in the field of healthcare CPD. CPS 201: Designing and Managing a CPD Program kicked off its first of two installments on Tuesday, May 24. Course Moderator Nicole Spino, MBA, CHCP, provided key takeaways from the first installment of CPS 201. Interested in learning more? Session 1: Supporting a CPD Program
Presenters: Nicole Spino and Patti Stella
Focus: From a high-level, what are the steps in managing and creating a CPD program?

Learning Objectives:

1. Define continuing professional development (CPD) and a CPD program.
2. Evaluate factors that impact their CPD program, including applicable accreditation regulations.
3. Implement strategies to support and enhance their organization’s ability to meet its educational mission.

In this session, Nicole and Patti walked learners through definitions and examples of continuing professional development (CPD) and CPD programs. They discussed common themes of various CPD programs via sample mission statements, provided a deeper dive into SOPs and P&Ps and how they relate back to accreditation criteria and policies, and explained the PDSA framework via a real-world example of how the Surgical Society of Oncology utilized the framework to pivot their live 2020 conference to a virtual event during COVID-19.

There were serval interactive components such as polling, group discussions and a breakout session. Hopefully learners walked away embolden with strategies to support their CPD program and demonstrate their program’s value.

Session 2: Working With Internal and External Stakeholders
Presenters: Heather Ranels and Sam Cribari-Starr
Focus: From a high-level perspective, what are best practices for working with internal and external stakeholders?

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify individuals and groups that might be internal stakeholders related to CPD activities/interventions and the CPD program.
2. Define roles of various stakeholders involved in CPD management.
3. Describe and apply the steps involved in completing a stakeholder analysis.
4. Apply strategies and best practices for purposeful engagement with stakeholders.

Heather and Sam kicked off this session by describing the National Learning Competencies and highlighting the portion on collaborating and partnering with stakeholders. They dove deeper into the difference between internal and external stakeholders as well as positive and negative stakeholders. The main portion of the presentation was an interactive activity where the learners completed a stakeholder analysis. The group then discussed how they should keep engaged once stakeholders are identified — the “now what?”  Hopefully learners walked away with strategies for more purposeful engagement with stakeholders.
