Preliminary Results Reveal Key Insights Into the CPD/CE Workforce

By: ACCME Newsletter

ACCME Newsletter (05/29/25) Vol. 15, No. 5

Preliminary results of the CPD/CE Workforce Survey provide details on the demographics, organization, and financial profile of the continuing professional development (CPD)/continuing education (CE) workforce. Results of the survey — a combined effort of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education, State Medical Society Recognized Accreditors, the Alliance for Continuing Education of the Health Professions, the Association of American Medical Colleges, and the Society for Academic Continuing Medical Education — were presented recently by ACCME President and CEO Graham McMahon, MD, MMSc. Of the 524 respondents, 83% identified as female, 13% as male, and 4% as other or preferred not to answer. More than half (54%) said they had duties in addition to CPD/CE, reflecting the importance of flexible and multifaceted staffing models. On the financial front, just over half of 514 respondents said they generate external revenue for their CPD/CE unit, while slightly less than half had an expectation that external revenue should cover the cost of their programs. Approximately half of the individuals said that a primary source of revenue is internal funding. In terms of workforce changes, there were an average of 1.31 new hires per organization over the past 2 years and 1.11 staff departures. “On average, there were more hires than departures in continuing education over the last two years, and more positions created than lost,” McMahon said. “So, the system is growing overall from what we see.” The preliminary findings also indicate that as professionals gain experience and leadership roles, they typically remain in their field for longer durations. Final data from the survey will provide further insight into the CPD/CE workforce and compensation.
