Preceptor Development: Using the American Nurses Credentialing Center Outcome-Based Continuing Education Model

By: Journal of Continuing Education in Nursing

Journal of Continuing Education in Nursing (05/01/24) Kizner, Kelly; Graebe, Jennifer

This article discusses the importance of preceptors in nursing professional development and how to use the Outcome-Based Continuing Education Model (OB-CE Model) to further preceptor development programs. The OB-CE Model, developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (AANC), combines Miller's Model of Clinical Competence and Moore's Seven Levels of Continuing Medical Education. This model, the authors write, "allows nursing preceptors to focus on establishing a stronger base of clinical competencies and skills, emphasizing the integrating of the learners' gained knowledge into skills and competencies." The researchers discuss the competencies needed by preceptors and the importance of competency-based education for them. Key to the goal of raising the standard of professional practice and patient care for nursing continuing professional development, the authors write, is "nurturing nurses as teachers through supportive preceptor development programs and dynamic learning environments that align with the ANCC nursing continuing professional development OB-CE Model."
