Longitudinal Knowledge Assessment Updates

By: ABIM Blog

ABIM Blog (05/07/25)

Physicians are increasingly choosing the Longitudinal Knowledge Assessment (LKA) over the traditional, 10-year Maintenance of Certification (MOC) exam, according to the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). Already this year, more than 20,000 physicians have enrolled in the LKA, with many participants enrolling in more than one LKA and others seeking to restore a lapsed certificate. Participants have noted in particular the flexibility the LKA offers as well as the ability to learn as they go. In an effort to best reflect what physicians see on a daily basis, the ABIM announced last year it was developing five new focused LKAs in three specialty areas. The new LKAs — in Malignant and Classical (Non-Malignant) Hematology, Hepatology, and Breast Cancer and Hematologic Neoplasms — are all set to launch in 2026. Updates for 2025 include increasing the amount of time allowed to respond to questions from 4 minutes to 5 and adding rationales and references for each question. ABIM made the updates to the LKA after receiving physician feedback and conducting a systematic best evidence-based review.
