Impact of Hands-on Training Sessions in Dental Traumatology on the Confidence Levels of Students and Dentists

Theoretical and hands-on training in dental traumatology are essential throughout a dental professional's career, new research confirms. Although dental students in France are instructed about the diagnosis and treatment of various dental traumas, clinical exposure is rare for students - and dentists must often deal with traumatic cases. The prospective, single-center controlled study assessed the effects of a hands-on training session on the confidence levels of 32 dental students and 15 dentists in managing several traumatic dental injuries. Participants completed surveys before and after the training, which covered procedures like direct pulp capping, partial pulpotomy, temporary fracture reconstruction, avulsed tooth reimplantation, and splinting. The practical sessions boosted participants' confidence levels, particularly for students. Although the extent of the improvement depended on the simulated procedures and surveyed groups, more than 80% expressed satisfaction with the realism of the simulation. Realistic workshops likely promoted increased participant involvement and instilled greater confidence in handling dental traumatology cases, the researchers suggest.
