Impact of Continuing Medical Education on Family Physicians’ Knowledge and Clinical Decision-making Regarding Intermittent Fasting in Type 2 Diabetes

Researchers evaluated whether a structured continuing medical education (CME) program could improve family physicians’ ability to manage patients with type two diabetes mellitus who practice intermittent fasting (IF). Among 180 physicians who completed pre- and post-intervention assessments, participation in a guideline-based educational session led to significant improvements in overall knowledge, with gains observed across areas including exercise and dietary guidance, diabetes management, oral antidiabetic medication adjustment, and insulin management. The intervention also substantially increased physicians’ self-reported competence in caring for patients with type 2 diabetes who practice IF and their confidence in adjusting medication doses and timing. Knowledge gains were not associated with years in practice, suggesting the program was beneficial regardless of professional experience. The researchers conclude that structured CME is an effective approach for improving short-term physician knowledge and confidence regarding the management of intermittent fasting in patients with type 2 diabetes.
