Compliance Check: Mitigating Relevant Financial Relationships for CME Planners

By: ACCME Highlights

ACCME Highlights (12/08/23) Richetti, Dion

Continuing medical education (CME) planners — individuals involved in the development of CME activities who are neither authors nor speakers — may be involved in content, topic or speaker selection, or may assess whether an activity is necessary. When working with CME planners, it is important to consider several factors when mitigating relevant financial relationships, so as not to potentially bias the content and to safeguard their independence. These steps include making sure the planner is recused from any stages of content planning that are tied to their financial relationship and calling in a second planner with no relevant relationship go over the planner's decisions before implementing them. Further information is available in the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education's Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education Toolkit.
