Council of Medical Specialty Societies (10/21/24)
The Council of Medical Specialty Societies (CMSS) has received supplemental funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in partnership with the Office of Long COVID Research and Practice under the Department of Health and Human Services, to improve provider education and engagement about Long COVID. "Because Long COVID is relatively new, many clinicians are unfamiliar with how to diagnose and treat it," said Priti Patel, CDC's Senior Advisor for Long COVID. "Our hope is to better equip primary care providers and other clinicians with the information and tools they need to care for their patients with Long COVID." In the 1-year program, CMSS will hold a series of coordinated activities designed to increase knowledge about Long COVID care, working with primary care and specialty societies, advanced practice practitioners, patients, and others. CMSS will also convene a multidisciplinary Long COVID Expert Panel to promote adoption of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) definition of Long COVID, and it will team up with clinical societies to establish clinical guidance and other materials on the diagnosis and treatment of Long COVID for clinicians and the public. "Through cross-specialty collaboration, shared evidence-based information can support coordinated care across primary and specialty care that meets the diverse healthcare needs of patients with Long COVID," CMSS noted.
