California Medical Association Announces New Standards for Cultural Linguistic Competency and Implicit Bias in CME

By: Almanac Staff

The California Medical Association (CMA) announced new standards for Cultural Linguistic Competency (CLC) and Implicit Bias (IB) in continuing medical education (CME). Developed with guidance from the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education, an advisory council of CME and health equity experts, and key stakeholders, the standards seek to further diversity, health equity and inclusion in healthcare. The standards are designed to help CME providers based in California and accredited by CMA CME or ACCME, as well as jointly accredited providers that serve physicians, fulfill the expectations of new legislation starting Jan. 1, 2022. The guidance standards are intended to be wide-ranging, flexible and practical for all provider types and specialties. Accredited providers are encouraged to consider how to apply each standard to each activity in meaningful and relevant ways for target audiences and their patients and communities. CMA CME offers diverse resources and tools to help providers meet the standards and include CLC & IB into their CME activities. "All practicing physicians participate in CME, which will create real-time, continuous and meaningful education, discussion and improvement in the critical areas of CLC and IB in health care in California," said CMA CME Chair Kristin Jensen, MD.
