A pilot interprofessional education (IPE) activity was successful in strengthening collaboration and understanding among pharmacy and dentistry students. The IPE activity, which was conducted in September 2022, included 19 pharmacy students and 7 dentistry students. The students worked together in teams with students from both schools, participating in sessions, group discussions, and small group cases and simulation activities. Simulated dental rounds provided an opportunity for team members to engage in interprofessional collaboration. A pre- and post-activity survey that used the Interprofessional Collaborative Competencies Attainment Survey tool reflected improvements on all subscales, with significant differences noted when using a Wilcoxon signed rank test to compare scores before and after the activity. The demonstrated gains in interprofessional competencies highlight the importance of such programs in preparing students for collaborative healthcare settings, the researchers report.
