By: BMJ Open

BMJ Open (11/05/2024) Cunningham, Shala; Lowe, Rachael; Footer, Cheryl; et al.

A mixed methods, exploratory study sought to understand the state of continuing professional development (CPD) for rehabilitation professionals around the world. For the study, a convenience sample of 445 rehabilitation professionals completed a survey about current access to CPD and their perceived needs for additional resources to support professional development. Semistructured interviews with 104 participants from four countries — Myanmar, Pakistan, Uganda, and Ukraine — sought to further understanding of the survey responses. Overall, there was wide variation in the CPD requirements for practicing clinicians and regulation of CPD activities, both across countries and professions. However, obstacles reported in low and middle-income countries involved access for technological resources and professional development, plus limited engagement and motivation for lifelong learning. Respondents did say they would like further materials and educational opportunities, including those for multidisciplinary rehabilitation with neurological conditions. The authors conclude, "There is an opportunity to enhance global rehabilitation workforce development by fostering partnerships focused on the efficient delivery of training. This includes developing CPD programs that consider cultural contexts, patient populations, and practice settings."
