By: Journal of Continuing Education in the Health Professions

Journal of Continuing Education in the Health Professions (12/17/25) McMahon, Graham T.

With the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in health professions education, this perspective explores how it could strengthen oversight of continuing professional development (CPD) by improving efficiency, consistency and insight while still relying on human judgment. Graham T. McMahon, president and CEO of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education, discusses ways in which accrediting bodies might use AI, such as screening reaccreditation materials, identifying high-risk activities for audit, analyzing national trends, connecting participating data with certification systems, and evaluating providers' responsible use of AI. Additionally, he presents a framework that balances the opportunities and risks related to accuracy, equity, transparency, security, and public trust. "The responsible integration of AI, guided by principles of accountability, transparency, equity, and security, can help ensure that oversight is both efficient and trustworthy, while reinforcing the credibility of CPD systems worldwide," McMahon concludes.
