The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education's (ACGME) latest Data Resource Book summarizes GME and resident physician statistics from July 2022 through June 2023. There were 13,066 accredited programs in 2022-2023, including 5,112 specialty programs and 6,576 subspecialty programs with Continued Accreditation. There were also 401 newly accredited programs and 52 had accreditation withdrawn. This academic year included 158,079 active residents and fellows in 13,066 programs, a 4,236-participant gain from last year. According to the data, 60% of active residents and fellows graduated from U.S.-based Liaison Committee on Medical Education-accredited medical schools. International medical school graduates constituted 21.1%, while osteopathic medical school graduates accounted for 18.9%. "Data is at the heart of our commitment to advancing health care and population health through education and accreditation," said ACGME President and CEO Thomas J. Nasca, MD, MACP. "The ACGME's Data Resource Book is a comprehensive reference for those involved in graduate medical education. This year's iteration is the latest step in our work to offer an even more valuable resource for the community."
