Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (10/10/22)

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education's (ACGME) 2021-2022 Data Resource Book reviews the size, scope and distribution of GME in the United States from July 1, 2021, to June 30, 2022. A total of 12,740 accredited programs were counted, including 5,579 specialty programs and 7,161 subspecialty programs. Another 384 programs were newly accredited, while 42 closed or voluntarily withdrew accreditation. The resource estimates there were 153,843 active residents and fellows in 12,740 ACGME-accredited programs, up from 4,643 in the last academic year. Nearly 60% of active participants graduated from Liaison Committee on Medical Education-accredited medical schools in the United States. International medical school enrollees accounted for 22.9% of graduates and 17.4% graduated from osteopathic medical institutions. "During a period of great uncertainty, it is encouraging to see the number of those entering residency and fellowship continue to increase as the need for highly skilled physicians is higher than ever," stated ACGME President and CEO Thomas J. Nasca, MD, MACP. "And, just as we rely on data in our fight against the pandemic, we hope the ACGME Data Resource Book serves as a valuable asset to those working in graduate medical education."
