ACCME Call for Comment on Policy Prohibiting Gift Cards or Personal Remuneration Associated with the Purchase of Accredited CME

By: ACCME News Release

ACCME News Release (12/10/25)

The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) is seeking public comment on a proposed policy that would prohibit accredited CME providers or their agents from offering gift cards, cash equivalents, or other personal remuneration in connection with CME registration or purchase, regardless of who pays the fees. Building on its July 2022 guidance, ACCME aims to eliminate ambiguity, strengthen enforcement, and uphold the integrity of accredited CME by preventing personal financial benefits to individual learners when costs are covered by employers or institutions. While discounts or credits to organizations paying fees remain permitted, no portion may be transferred as a personal benefit to learners. This policy, which replaces communicated expectation to accredited providers regarding the use of gift cards, would require providers to ensure that marketing materials, registration systems, and third-party arrangements comply. Stakeholders are invited to review the draft and submit feedback via survey by January 26, 2026.
