The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) has awarded a research grant to the Society for Academic Continuing Medical Education (SACME). The society plans to conduct a review to identify continuing education (CE) interventions incorporating best practices in pragmatic educational design, develop educational toolkits to apply these methods in CE, partner with ACCME to distribute the toolkits to the CE community and assess their effectiveness and impact. The toolkits will be learner-centered and incorporate equity, diversity and inclusion so educators can cultivate a skilled healthcare workforce. ACCME is allocating the grant to support research and scholarship in CE, which is an element in its commendation criteria. ACCME also aims to encourage accredited providers to apply practices that improve CE's efficacy and lead to quantifiable enhancements in clinician practice and patient care. "This grant provides another outstanding opportunity for SACME to realize its vision and support the continuing education community in providing the best education utilizing evidence-based practices in [continuing professional development] instructional design in a practical and pragmatic way," said SACME President Betsy Williams, PhD, MPH. "We will focus on providing flexible approaches to meet the diverse needs of our community in an accessible and equitable way." ACCME President and CEO Graham McMahon MD, MMSc, said the grant will tap SACME's novel capabilities and expertise to further that endeavor to realize the partners' shared goal of optimizing care for patients and communities through CE.
