Shaping the Future of Continuing Education: Understanding the Alliance Board of Directors Nominating Process

By: Tricia Wilson, MS, CHCP

The Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions (Alliance) Board of Directors plays a vital role in guiding the organization’s strategic direction and advancing the continuing professional development (CPD) of its membership.

To this end, the Alliance Nominating Committee is tasked with identifying, evaluating and recommending a slate of qualified candidates from the membership to fill vacancies on the board of directors annually. Key desired strengths include:

  • Change management: Experience in ensuring individuals, teams and/or organizations have the awareness, leadership, coaching and training needed to successfully navigate change.
  • Leadership: Ability to express ideas clearly, critical and analytical thinking, accountability, strategic orientation and a team builder.
  • Healthcare environment: Evidence of knowledge of the evolving changes in the healthcare landscape and its impact on the profession and professional.
  • Quality and performance improvement: Experience and understanding of healthcare quality initiatives and performance outcomes through measurable learning interventions.
  • Interprofessional collaboration: Experience in working across an organization to build collaborative relationships with two or more professions and cultivating successful interprofessional education to achieve process improvement.
  • Adult learning principles: Skills in instructional design, education research and educational methodologies such as andragogy, experiential and transformational learning.
  • Strategic and business acumen: Experience with strategic planning, business development, budgeting and financial review and strong experience working with members. Prior experience being on a board (of any type of organization) would be helpful.

Application and Interview Process

The committee conducts annual reviews of its application and interview processes to ensure that the most qualified candidates are put forth on the ballot. Each application is reviewed by the committee as a group and then is scored via a rubric. From there, candidates who meet the rubric’s threshold are invited to participate in a virtual interview. Committee members then score candidates’ interview responses through a second rubric and determine who will move forward to the ballot for the membership overall.

Board Member Benefits

Serving on the board offers members a unique opportunity to:

  • Represent the Alliance and the broader CPD profession.
  • Connect and collaborate with peers across disciplines.
  • Develop governance, strategic planning and financial management skills.
  • Engage with diverse stakeholders on high-level organizational priorities.
  • Influence the direction of the Alliance and support the development of future CPD professionals.

Board Composition, Term Limits and Time Commitment

The board comprises representatives from across Alliance member sections.

Directors are elected for a three-year term, with the option to reapply to serve a second term.

Commitment includes:

  • Two in-person board meetings per year (Annual Conference and September budget meeting)
  • Monthly two-hour virtual meetings
  • Participation in the Governance Committee (for new board members)
  • Estimated 5–10 hours of monthly service, depending on committee and liaison roles

Election Process and Timeline

The structured annual timeline includes:

  • June: Call for nominations opens
  • Tuesday, July 15: Applications and materials due
  • August: Candidate interviews conducted
  • September: Ballot distributed to membership
  • October: New board members announced
  • Annual Conference: New board members participate in board and strategic planning meetings.

Through this comprehensive and structured process, the Alliance Nominating Committee ensures the Alliance Board of Directors is well-equipped to guide the organization’s mission and support the advancement of continuing education across the health professions.
