A four-domain model of learner engagement helped support the use of the Learner Engagement Instrument (LEI) to measure engagement in a short continuing professional development (CPD) activity. For the study, 415 unique participants attended one of four CPD presentations (one in-person, two online livestreamed and one either in-person or online), for a total of 203 different CPD presentations in 2018, 2020, 2021 and 2022. In all, they completed the LEI 11,567 times. The four-domain model (encompassing emotional, behavioral, cognitive in-class and cognitive out-of-class domains) showed the best model fit for all four CPD classes. The findings were similar for in-person and online delivery, and the reliability for overall scores and domain scores were mostly acceptable. The findings confirmed a correlation between LEI scores and teaching effectiveness, and they were used to develop a shorter, four-item instrument, the LEI Short Form. The study, the researchers noted, "provides validity evidence that supports using LEI scores to measure learner engagement in both in-person and livestreamed CPD activities."
