Researchers developed a behavior change counseling (BCC) training framework for health care providers (HCPs). To do this, they identified key BCC skills for HCPs through a modified Delphi process. The Delphi panel selected 11 core BCC competencies for HCPs and defined motivational communication. A survey of HCP attitudes and training requirements indicated a willingness to spend 4 hours on introductory BCC training. Meanwhile, the online interactive tool Motivational Communication Competency Assessment Test and a motivational communication training program — motivated by accredited for continuing education by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada — were developed with participant feedback. An iterative integrated knowledge translation process helped to address any obstacles to BCC implementation that arose while developing the new framework. The researchers expect the new BCC training framework will eventually increase uptake of the intervention.
