The Power of QI Coaching: What CE/CPD Professionals Need to Know

The Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine's Center for Continuing Education and the Boston Medical Center (BMC) Health System's Quality and Patient Safety Department jointly operate the QI Hub, a resource for mentorship and coaching on quality improvement (QI) initiatives. A qualitative evaluation of participants in the Improvement Leadership Academy — a 6-month experiential QI course supported by QI Hub Faculty Mentors — found that coaching significantly enhanced project success by offering practical methodological guidance, insider knowledge of BMC's systems and workflows, and a psychologically safe environment for learning. Most participants reported high satisfaction with their mentors, emphasizing how coaching helped refine project design, navigate barriers, and maintain momentum. For continuing education and continuing professional development professionals, the findings highlight that structured QI coaching accelerates improvement, benefits from contextual expertise, requires clear expectations, and can be effectively embedded within educational programming to build long-term improvement capacity.
