Researchers surveyed more than 24,000 pharmacy technicians with active licenses in Ohio to characterize key elements of professional development in order to encourage retention. Among the 1,386 responses, the most frequently cited professional development opportunity provided by employers was continuing education. Less common opportunities included attending conferences, specialized training courses and tuition reimbursement. Respondents listed the additional cost, time and perceived value as the biggest hindrances to professional development participation. The most helpful opportunities for job preparation and training were peer-provided guidance and mentorship, achieving national certification and formal on-the-job training. Respondents cited increased pay, development opportunities and employer mandates as their main educational motivators. In terms of preparation for new positions, 57% percent of the respondents felt strong or very strong job readiness after 90 days. Training graduated from a formal hands-on format to self-guided training as the technicians' careers progressed. "Pharmacy practice sites interested in retaining technicians should invest in offering and encouraging pharmacy technicians to participate in development opportunities," the researchers recommend. Additionally, they suggest retention could be improved through ongoing education and increased compensation incentives.
