New ACS Statement Addresses Need for Surgeons to Sustain Lifelong Competency

Journal of the American College of Surgeons (04/24)

The American College of Surgeons (ACS) released an updated statement that focuses on sustaining lifelong competency of surgeons. In the statement, ACS recommends using a "comprehensive, whole-of-career testing strategy for all surgeons and surgical trainees regardless of age and experience." Informing the statement is new research in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, members of the ACS Board of Governors Physician Competency and Health Workgroup, that reviewed 62 studies comparing age and outcomes. The ACS statement and the study both asked who should lead an effort to create competency assessments and related policy.
