The Maryland Higher Education Commission has awarded conditional approval to the Meritus School of Osteopathic Medicine to operate as an in-state degree-granting institution. The school, located in Hagerstown, Md., has also received pre-accreditation from the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation. The first new medical school in the state in more than a century, Meritus has opened enrollment for the fall 2025 semester. The 4-year school will have 90 medical students in its first class, but future classes will enroll up to 180 students. "We started on this path to fill the critical shortage of physicians in our community, the state and the nation," said Maulik Joshi, DrPH, Meritus president and CEO. "Now, we've taken the steps that will create generational change."
