Evolution of Continuing Medical Education in Radiology: On-Site vs Remote

The COVID-19 pandemic prompted an immediate shift away from live educational events (LEE) in favor of remote activities, and electronic learning materials and hybrid events are expected to continue their surge, even as in-person events pick up again. Researchers evaluated continuing medical education/continuous professional development (CME/CPD) in European Radiology, particularly the balance of LEE vs. virtual participation. Using data from CME/CPD surveys conducted by the Accreditation Council on Imaging and CME/CMD applications, the study found that 9 out of 10 European radiologists support a unified system of CME/CPD and required CME. However, only 20% of employers expressed full support for CME/CPD. There was also a trend towards ELM among younger radiologists. As the pandemic spread in 2020, attendance at LEEs decreased from 95.5% to 33%, while use of ELM increased from 33% to 58%. After the pandemic, 38% of participants in live-streamed events attended 1-5 events, while 52% of LEE participants attended 1-5 events. Participants in all formats (online, on-site and on-demand) all indicated that content was a top priority. Additionally, although the assessed quality of LEE did not change, rated good or very good by 48% and no change by 36%, 83% of respondents said the quality of live-streamed events was good or very good.
