In this article, researchers explore the use of collaborative online international learning (COIL) in continuing education for practicing nurses. With the online learning technique, faculty from two cultures create course activities that focus on collaborative student learning as well as cross-cultural awareness. With advances in educational technologies, COIL activities can take many pedagogical forms; however, they should aim to promote "informed discussions, cultural awareness, respectful dialogue and interpersonal growth," according to the authors. These are key factors "to developing a global mindset to support the type of transnational collaboration that is needed to address emerging threats to population health, promote cultural sensitivity and facilitate health promotion on a global scale," the researchers conclude.
