This article aims to encourage a dialogue on effectively communicating the value of continuing medical education/continuing professional development (CME/CPD) within institutions. Stanford Center for Continuing Medical Education Executive Director Kurt Snyder, JD, MBA IT, writes that such communication is vital for dispelling the myth held by many leaders and clinicians that CME/CPD is mainly a mandatory requirement. "Before communicating the value of CME to others, it is essential to assess the audience and consider what resonates with them," he recommends. "Different individuals may have varying levels of understanding, appreciation and concerns regarding CME." Snyder includes a list of the many values of CME/CPD and advises providers to prioritize the most effective items for their purposes, customizing their message appropriately. The list of categories includes patient care/population health, culture, education, reputation builder, connection facilitator, financial and compliance/regulations. Subcategories in each module cover clinician, institution and/or patient perspectives. "I envision the list as a toolbox from which a person can select one or more values based on the specific "project" or situation at hand," Snyder writes.
