Board Certification Remains Important to Consumers

A 2025 consumer survey conducted by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago on behalf of the American Board of Medical Specialties found that board certification remains a critical factor in choosing a physician. In all, 93% of respondents ranked board certification as important alongside insurance coverage, communication skills, and office location. The survey of 1,516 U.S. adults revealed that most consumers view board-certified doctors as offering superior care and expertise, with 98% expecting physicians to stay current with medical advances for their specialty, 95% expecting ongoing education and testing, and 93% supporting requirements for doctors to demonstrate continued competency in their specialty. Additionally, most respondents (90%) said that physicians need regular, in-depth knowledge testing in their specialty, not just continuing medical education credits.
