AMA Launches Resource to Help Physicians Meet DEA Training Requirement

By: AMA News Release

AMA News Release (04/04/23)

A new American Medical Association (AMA) resource on the AMA Ed Hub will help healthcare providers complete a one-time eight-hour continuing medical education requirement for treating substance use disorders from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). "This is an important resource for physicians and medical practitioners to further their education and continue AMA's mission of ending the nation's drug overdose epidemic," said AMA Substance Use and Pain Care Task Force Chair Bobby Mukkamala, MD. Early completion will allow physicians to confirm meeting the requirement by checking it off their DEA registration application or renewal form, starting June 27, 2023. Providers can complete the requirement by taking a combination of free courses listed on the AMA Ed Hub page. Sessions on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders constitutes valid credit. The new resource page's trainings fulfill the mandates of the Medication Access and Training Expansion Act.
