The COVID-19 pandemic led to a number of changes in how healthcare professionals (HCPs) access and share medical information. There was a rapid shift to e-learning, a user-friendly, cost-effective solution that is able to reach many more people. E-learning is also flexible in terms of how and when the content is disseminated. There are several factors that are essential for a successful e-learning strategy, including understanding the unique content needs and expectations of HCPs. A Wiley survey of HCPs worldwide found that half said their greatest challenge is finding relevant information on their particular topic of interest. Sucharita Kundu, Senior Content Strategist at Wiley, explains: "We need to understand what HCPs really need to help them in their clinical practice in the real world. So, we begin with a very thorough gap analysis, look at specific challenges and learning objectives, and start to build an e-learning course from there." Additional necessary steps for a high-impact e-learning program include providing reliable and relevant content, adopting a multi-channel approach for dissemination and considering different engagement strategies. Other success factors include developing the programs for the greatest accessibility, ease of use and engagement, and tracking the performance of the programs. It is helpful to use different measures of uptake, performance and success for the various e-learning formats and channels being used. Further measures to consider are program or module completion levels, the number and frequency of visits and the number of downloads.
