Professional Development Coaching for Health Professions Graduate Faculty

Researchers developed and assessed a professional development coaching program for diverse graduate faculty at a health professions university. The program delivered one-on-one support for 67 faculty as four 60-minute or eight 30-minute sessions each semester by eight trained volunteer coaches without university affiliation. In all, 378 sessions with 281 hours of coaching were held. Post-session surveys indicated that coaching helped faculty meet their professional goals and helped prepare them for future professional success. The study authors said the outcomes suggest "professional development coaching can help faculty reach their professional goals and add value to an institution." The program could be a potentially useful model on other campuses as well, they noted.
