Neurocritical Care Entrustable Professional Activities for Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Education and Professional Development: Standardizing Curriculum, Training, and Assessment

By: Pediatric Critical Care Medicine

Pediatric Critical Care Medicine (09/09/25) Becker, Andrew E.; Abend, Nicholas S.; Benedetti, Giulia M.; et al.

A multidisciplinary expert panel from the Pediatric Neurocritical Care Research Group and the Education in Pediatric Intensive Care Collaborative developed a standardized set of 13 entrustable professional activities (EPAs) for pediatric neurocritical care within pediatric critical care medicine (PCCM). Using surveys and Delphi methodology across local and national focus groups from 2022 to 2024, the team refined an initial list of 15 EPAs based on the American Board of Pediatrics practice analysis and stakeholder input. The final EPAs, validated through three rounds of consensus with high response rates and content validity indices ranging from 0.81 to 1.00, were organized into three domains: general management and principles, disease-specific management, and neuroprognostication and end-of-life care. These EPAs aim to support competency-based education and assessment, ensuring consistent training and proficiency in neurocritical care for PCCM fellowship programs.
