Bloomberg Philanthropies is making a $600 million donation to four historically Black medical schools. Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C.; Meharry Medical College in Nashville, and Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta each will receive $175 million, while Charles R. Drew University of Medicine & Science in Los Angeles will receive $75 million. Combined, the four schools graduate approximately 50% of the Black physicians in the United States, Bloomberg Philanthropies said. Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have received a number of large gifts in recent years, significantly increasing their impact. In a statement, Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire founder of the Bloomberg business and financial data news company and of Bloomberg Philanthropies, said: "We have much more to do to build a country where every person, regardless of race, has equal access to quality health care — and where students from all backgrounds can pursue their dreams." This donation, he said, "will empower new generations of Black doctors to create a healthier and more equitable future for our country." The gift also includes $5 million to support the development of the Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine in New Orleans, a partnership between Xavier University and Ochsner Health.
